This Week's Banner Photo, 2010

Postby Alco83 » Sat Jan 02, 2010 7:51 pm

I apologize that we did not have a photo last week, I was away visiting family during the holidays longer than expected. Anyway, for the first image of 2010 by Tom Granville we see an Elgin, Joliet & Eastern Railway SD40-2 leading a now-CN train at Homewood, Illinois in early September of 2009.

Adam,
Nice photo. One tidbit though. The EJ&E had SD38's and 38-2's. This is one of the dash 2's, now a part of the Canadian National fleet. Thankfully they have escaped the paint booth, unlike most of the Illinois Central locos, or worse yet, they could be retired and scrapped like the DM&IR locos.

Matt,

Thanks for the correction, I was going off of Tom's provided information. Randy, it's a fine shot! ;) And Happy New Year to you as well, my friend.

A warm looking and colorful banner photo that gives us a brief respite from the bitter cold.

This week's photo from Danny Robie depicts the defunct NYC/PC/Conrail (originally the Kanawha & West Virginia) Blue Creek coal branch near Charleston, West Virginia (the pictured location is at Quick). If successful, this line will be rebuilt as the Charleston, Blue Creek & Sanderson Railway and once again hauling black diamonds out of the West Virginia hills.

Shortline railroading at its finest, here we see the Black River & Western near Berkeley, West Virginia in late December, 2009 in a photo from Wade Massie. Note the calf in between the two Geeps.

Nice shot Wade!! First day it had been above freezing here in Berkeley County in two weeks. The SD is lettered for the BR&W, but its actually running on the Winchester & Western, which have it on long term lease. I noticed they were down to two or three Geeps plus the two slugs. Nice to see some variety.

I'd like to get back up in that area again to check out the short lines. Its bbe a few years since I've been in the area. Matt, I understand what you're talking about, we just got above freezing Tuesday after about 2 1/2 weeks. We're under a flood watch since about 12" of snow has melted since then along with almost an inch of rain. All of last winter we had 56" of snow, as of one day last week, we've already had over 65" since the middle of Dec.

Real nice shot Wade. The black and white engine looks good in the snow.

Adam,

You had me scared there for a minute thinking the BR&W had relocated from Flemington NJ to West By God Virginia. :o I'm glad Matt was able to put my mind at ease.

Thinking spring and warmer weather here we see a shot from Rob Kitchen depicting an NS freight passing former PRR position-light signals near Newport, Pennsylvania in mid June, 2009.

From Brian Rackley we see a shiny new Seaboard SD50, #8541 with sister #8544, rolling along through the last light of an early spring day in late March of 1984 at Dolton, Illinois.

From Randy Kotuby we have a real classic depicting three well-known Northeastern roads, albeit by this time only the colors of the lead locomotive were still "flying." Shown along the D&H's main line somewhere in New York state a GP39-2 leads former Reading Lehigh Valley Geeps in early June, 1977.
